Erwitt Elliot A.K.A. - The Art of Andre's Solidor
Andre S. Solidor was born in 1962 in the outback of French Guiana in the town of Grand Citron in the district of Saint Laurent-du-Maroni, of an Indian mother and an aristocrat French father who disappeared soon after his birth. Early in life Andre displayed a strong visual sense and talent for drawing. At the age of 14, young Andre was sent to Haiti to work harvesting on a cassava plantation. It is there, in the most unlikely of places that he discovered photography. His inspiration came from a Life magazine photographer, who passed through on assignment photographing poverty, and befriended and nurtured the young impressionable Solidor. That is how Andre learned to his amazement and delight that photography would be his mission in life and his escape from want with his entry to the wondrous world of art.
To this day Andre S. Solidor is a shy, modest, retiring artist who thinks about returning to his village of Grand Citron and to his roots whose influence permeates his art. But he has not quite made up his mind as of this writing.
